Is the Golden Circle worth a visit?

Absolutely, the Golden Circle is well worth the detour in our eyes! Between its awe-inspiring locations, varied experiences and great diversity of natural sites (waterfalls, geysers, ice caves, lakes and much more), this is a region we love in Iceland, summer and winter alike. Like us, you’ll be amazed by this spectacular concentration of the country, one of the few places where the power of nature and the cultural, historical and architectural heritage coexist harmoniously. It’s also an area that can easily be visited on organized 1-day, 2-day or 3-day excursions from the capital Reykjavik, just a 1-hour drive from Thingvellir.

Reason 1 – The raw power of Icelandic nature

Did you know that, whatever the season, the Golden Circle is one of the places where we have intensely felt and appreciated the power of Mother Nature? The Golden Circle offered us a condensation of the natural forces that have shaped Iceland. We were impressed by the way this area clearly displays the island’s intense geological activity. Spreading tectonic plates, bubbling springs and powerful waterfalls testify to the extraordinary energy that animates this land.

In just 1 day at Le Cercle d’Or, we were able to observe and experience Iceland in its raw state. The concentration of these natural phenomena makes this region truly unique in the world!

Reason 2 – One of Iceland’s most beautiful waterfalls: Gullfoss

Gullfoss, whose name means “golden waterfall”, is one of the most impressive waterfalls we’ve seen in Iceland, especially in winter. Imagine this natural wonder spilling over 2 levels into a narrow canyon, creating a spectacle both surprising and hypnotic. The waterfall totals 32m in height and can reach an extraordinary flow of 140m³ per second during the summer glacial melt.

We enjoyed the various vantage points from which to admire Gullfoss from different angles. The main trail takes you right up to the waterfall, where you can feel the intensity of the current and be lightly sprayed by the spray. On a sunny day, we were even lucky enough to see beautiful rainbows forming in the mist. This waterfall alone is reason enough to visit the Golden Circle, in our opinion!

Reason 3 – A geyser erupts before your very eyes

Now it’s on to the Haukadalur geothermal zone, Iceland’s playground for underground energy. Although the Great Geysir, which gave its name to all the world’s geysers, is now dormant, its neighbor Strokkur promises an extraordinary show every 5 to 10 minutes.

The Strokkur geyser bubbles before erupting

We spent over an hour fascinated by Strokkur’s regular eruptions. The phenomenon begins with a bubbling of the surface, followed by a bluish bubble that forms just before the water shoots skywards, reaching 15 to 40m in height. The anticipation of the precise moment of eruption creates a palpable excitement among visitors – we felt it, and what suspense! Beyond Strokkur, we also explored the surrounding area, dotted with bubbling mud pools, fumaroles and amazingly colorful springs. It’s one of the few places in the world where you can so easily observe this type of geothermal phenomenon.

Reason 4 – A walk between 2 continents in Thingvellir

We now head for the emblematic Thingvellir National Park. You’ll find, as we did, that this place is of major importance, both geologically and historically. This is where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates meet, creating a spectacular landscape of faults and crevasses. We were impressed to be able to literally walk between 2 continents that are a few centimetres apart every year. Find out more about our tour options to visit Thingvellir National Park.

In addition to its geological interest, Thingvellir is also of inestimable historical value to Icelanders. The Althing was founded here in 930, and is considered the oldest parliament in the world. We hiked the footpaths through these immense rock formations, discovering panels explaining the history of the site. The Silfra fault, filled with exceptionally clear water, also offers the more adventurous the chance to dive or snorkel between 2 continents. Tempting, isn’t it?
This unique experience makes Thingvellir a must-see stop on the Golden Circle, in summer and winter alike.

Reason 5 – Spectacular scenery within easy reach of the city Reykjavik

One of the great advantages of the Golden Circle is its proximity to the Icelandic capital. Located just 40km from Reykjavik, we reached the 1st stop in Thingvellir in less than 1 hour’s drive. This makes it an ideal excursion even if you have limited time in Iceland.

You’ll appreciate how easy it is to explore this region. Roads are well-maintained and tourist sites have well-developed infrastructures including parking lots, footpaths and information centers. The complete tour can be completed in 1 day from Reykjavik, giving you plenty of time to explore each site. This accessibility, combined with the exceptional concentration of natural wonders, makes the Golden Circle a must for any visitor to Iceland, even those with a short stay. What more could you ask for?

Reason 6 – Year-round exploration

We loved Iceland as a destination that’s easy to visit whatever the season! What’s more, the Golden Circle has the advantage of being accessible all year round, with different but equally memorable activities depending on the season. We’ve visited this region several times: great images and unique experiences guaranteed!

In summer, we took advantage of the long sunny days to explore the sites without precipitation, with lush green landscapes contrasting with volcanic rocks. In winter, the experience was completely different, but just as magical: partially frozen waterfalls, geysers rising in the cold air and snow-covered landscapes create an enchanting atmosphere. The region is also ideal for observing the northern lights from October to March, away from light pollution. The roads in the Golden Circle are generally clear, making it one of the most reliable excursions all year round.

Reason 7 – Geothermal pleasures all year round

Another unique moment we experienced in Iceland: the pleasures of natural hot springs! Iceland’s intense geothermal activity, particularly in the Golden Circle, offers unique experiences all year round. For example, the Secret Lagoon in Fludir, less touristy than the famous Blue Lagoon, was particularly appealing with its 38-40°C waters.

Also on your list: a visit to the Laugarvatn Fontana spa complex, where you can bathe in pools of varying temperatures while admiring the lake. These geothermal baths are great in winter, when you can bask in the warm water while contemplating snow-covered landscapes or even the Northern Lights. Can you see yourself there? The experience of geothermal heat isn’t limited to bathing: we were also fascinated by the baking of traditional Icelandic bread in the hot ground near Lake Laugarvatn, an ancestral method that testifies to the ingenuity of Icelanders in making the most of natural resources. Try a surprising geothermal bread-baking experience in Laugarvatn!

Reason 8 – The Golden Circle at your own pace: active or contemplative

One of our favorite features of the Golden Circle is the variety of experiences, suitable for all types of travelers. If you’re keen on sporting activities, the region offers a wealth of adventure possibilities: diving or snorkeling in the Silfra fissure, hiking on the Thingvellir trails, snowmobile excursions on the Langjökull glacier or horseback riding through volcanic landscapes.

If you prefer a more contemplative approach, we’ve found that the main sites are easily accessible and have well-equipped viewpoints. It’s also possible to get off the beaten track and discover lesser-known places: for example, we explored the lesser-known Bruarfoss waterfall, whose intense blue water is particularly photogenic. This flexibility allowed us to adapt our visit to our desires and energy levels, alternating between moments of intense activity and periods of peaceful contemplation of the natural wonders.

Reason 9 – The country’s 3 facets: fire, ice, memory

As you can see, the Golden Circle offers a perfect introduction to the 3 fundamental elements that define Iceland: fire (volcanism), ice (glaciers) and memory (history). This region concentrates these 3 aspects in a remarkable way, allowing you to capture the very essence of the country.

Fire” is omnipresent, with the geysers, steaming soils and volcanic landscapes we passed through. The “ice” element is evident in the glacial waters of Gullfoss or the view of the Langjökull Glacier in the distance.

As for memory, it’s embodied in Thingvellir, where Iceland’s thousand-year-old history comes to life. We were touched by the way these different facets intertwine harmoniously. The Kerid crater, with its lake of contrasting colors, is also a perfect example of the fusion of geological forces and natural beauty that characterizes Iceland. A holistic approach that gave us a better understanding of what makes this country so unique and fascinating!

Some disadvantages of a trip to the Golden Circle

The tourist influx

As the Golden Circle is one of Iceland’s most popular tours, keep in mind that crowds can be high, especially in peak season (June to August) and at peak times. We’ve noticed that the main sites like Strokkur geyser and Gullfoss waterfall can get very crowded between 11am and 4pm, when the majority of organized tours from Reykjavik converge there.

To avoid the crowds, we recommend starting your day early or visiting the sites in the late afternoon. If possible, plan your visit for the low or mid season (spring or autumn). Another option is to spend a night in the area, allowing you to explore the main sites at sunrise or sunset, when they are less crowded and the light is particularly good for taking photos.

Changing weather conditions

As you probably know, Iceland’s climate is notoriously unstable, and the Golden Circle is no exception. During our visit, we experienced bright blue skies, sudden showers and even a brief hailstorm in the space of a few hours!
Don’t let yourself be surprised by these rapid changes, which will make your visits less enjoyable without adequate preparation.

Laugarvatn

Our advice: adopt the layering system and always keep a waterproof garment close at hand, even if the sky looks clear at first. In winter, expect more demanding conditions, with slippery roads or snowfall. But rest assured: the main roads in the Golden Circle are maintained and cleared quickly.

And while the weather can complicate organization, it also offers magical moments to capture: a rainbow over Gullfoss, dramatic light on the mountains or a landscape frozen in frost.

The rates

Unsurprisingly, the summer months of June to August are the most expensive. It’s high tourist season in Iceland, and accommodation, car rentals and excursions around the Golden Circle are often more expensive.
The most affordable periods are generally April-May and September-October, when the weather remains pleasant and the sites less crowded. Winter can also be more economical, but don’t forget that travel conditions are more demanding.

Where to go in the Golden Circle

If you only have 1 day to discover the Golden Circle, we recommend you concentrate on the 3 main attractions that form the core of this tour:

  • Thingvellir National Park, with its impressive tectonic fault and historical significance
  • The geothermal zone of Haukadalur, where you can observe the regular eruptions of the Strokkur geyser.
  • The Gullfoss waterfall, whose power and beauty left us speechless.

If you have more time or wish to explore less-visited sites, we suggest you add these complementary attractions:

  • Kerid crater, a volcanic crater of contrasting colors
  • The Secret Lagoon in Fludir, for a relaxing swim in geothermal waters
  • Bruarfoss Waterfall, less well known but renowned for the incredible blue color of its water.
  • Lake Laugarvatn and its thermal spa
  • The Fridheimar tomato greenhouse, to discover how geothermal energy is used on farms.

For greater flexibility, we recommend renting a car and exploring the region at your own pace.

Normally, the roads are cleared quickly enough for access. But during snowstorms, roads may be closed at the last minute – always check the status of roads on Umferdin.

Route in Iceland

If you prefer not to drive, there are numerous organized excursions available from Reykjavik, with options to suit all tastes and budgets.

Don’t hesitate to plan an overnight stay in the region if your schedule allows. This will give you the opportunity to see the main sights without the crowds, and explore more of the Golden Circle’s lesser-known treasures.

Frequently asked questions

Can we visit the Golden Circle in winter?

Yes, that’s right! We found that the roads are generally well maintained and remain open all year round. In our opinion, it’s a great time of year to admire the frosty landscapes, the low-angled light and the contrasts between ice, snow and steam. An organized excursion may be a good option in case of uncertain weather. Find all our winter tips here.

Can you see the northern lights?

Yes, the Golden Circle is a great place to see the Northern Lights, away from the city lights. The best time to visit is from late September to early April, when the nights are long and the sky fairly dark. To maximize your chances, opt for the months from November to March, targeting clear nights and places with little light pollution (Thingvellir National Park is an excellent spot, for example). Treat yourself to a guided tour under these sublime celestial lights!

Do I need a car?

It all depends on your itinerary and what type of trip you prefer!
It’s not essential: you can rent a car for greater freedom, but there are many day trips available from Reykjavik, with or without a guide. It’s a practical solution, especially in winter. The attractions of the Golden Circle are also among our winter excursion ideas from the capital.

What’s the difference between the Golden Circle and the Ring Road?

Beware of the risk of confusion: the Cercle d’Or, referred to in this article, is a small loop near Reykjavik. Then there’s the “Ring Road”, the main road around the island. Finally, note that the “Golden Ring” does not exist in Iceland.
