Lake Selvallavatn
Lake Selvallavatn is the focal point of this view. Nestled in the colorful hills of the Snæfellsnes peninsula, it reflects the surrounding landscape and offers a panorama of great serenity.
We were struck by the palette of colors that surround it, between the mossy green of the slopes and the darker tones of the rock. In calm weather, the surface of the water acts as a natural mirror. You can reach its banks via one of the paths that leave from the parking lot. This short walk brings you closer to the lake and allows you to appreciate the varied geology of the area from a different angle.

The volcanic craters and lava field of Berserkjahraun
Opposite the lake, the Berserkjahraun lava field stretches as far as the eye can see. This vast terrain of solidified lava bears witness to the intense volcanic activity that has shaped the Snæfellsnes peninsula over the millennia.
The colorful hues of the volcanic rock stand out against the green of the moss on the lava field. You can observe this expanse directly from the vantage point, without any special effort. This mineral landscape offers a real insight into Icelandic geology, far from the usual clichés.

Selvallafoss waterfall
On your left, looking at the view, descend a little and you’ll find a small waterfall called Selvallafoss. Less well known than Iceland’s great waterfalls, it has a discreet charm that appealed to us. The flow varies according to the season and recent rainfall, but the setting remains pleasant at all times.

The arid volcanic cone towards Stykkishólmur
Continuing along Route 56 towards Stykkishólmur, the landscape changes character. An arid crater is distinguished by its ochre and brown hues, devoid of vegetation. We found that this contrast with the moss near the lake illustrates the geological variety of Snæfellsnes.
This relief, sculpted by volcanic activity, reveals another facet of the peninsula. You can see it from the road without any particular detour. We couldn’t find the name of this volcanic cone.

Other nearby attractions
You can combine your visit to Selvallavatn Viewpoint with these nearby attractions:
- The Berserkjahraun lava field, preferably in a 4WD vehicle, a superb route away from the crowds.
- the small town of Stykkisholmur and its cruises around the islands
- And you’re not far from the famous Kirkjufell mountain!
