How to get there? Access road

It’s an easy drive along Route 54, with one lane in each direction and a sufficiently wide carriageway. The access road to the Kirkjufell parking lot is normally cleared quickly in case of snow, as it is one of the peninsula’s main attractions. However, during storms, roads can be closed at the last minute. We strongly recommend that you always check the status of the roads on Umferdin before you leave here.

If you don’t want to drive, organized tours of the Snaefellsnes peninsula from Reykjavik always stop at Kirkjufell. You can check out the various options available to reach this iconic site without having to drive yourself – see the options here!

Parking

A good-sized, flat parking lot is available on site. We recommend that you always park in the direction of departure and maneuver on arrival, as you don’t know how the visitors after you will park. The parking lot is now subject to a charge, and you should expect to pay 1,000ISK for the day, even if your visit is short.

Useful tips: duration, schedules, difficulties…

Best time to visit, opening hours and prices

This site is well worth a visit in winter, with its 2 partly frozen waterfalls. We’ve devoted an entire article to this experience, which reveals the mountains in a whole new light. Otherwise, access is free all year round, day and night. Kirkjufell and its waterfalls are recognized as one of Iceland’s favorite spots for photographers. Here you can admire sunrises and sunsets in exceptional conditions. It’s also an ideal place to watch the Northern Lights , with an unobstructed view to the north.

To optimize your chances of discovering the mountain and its waterfalls in the best possible conditions, we recommend staying close to the site. You’ll be able to come back again and again. See our article on the best hotels on the peninsula to plan your accommodation.

Length of visit and main difficulties

Allow at least 30 minutes for your visit, or more if you’re a keen photographer.

The trails are steep, but we didn’t encounter any major difficulties. It’s about a 5-minute walk from the parking lot to the waterfalls on a well-marked path. However, in winter with snow and ice on the ground, the terrain can become slippery and requires special care. We strongly recommend that you always carry cleats with you, so that you can add them to your shoes if the need arises. This simple equipment can make all the difference in terms of safety and comfort as you explore the site.

There is no on-site installation. The town of Grundarfjordur is just a 5-minute drive away and offers a variety of restaurants and services.

View of Kirkjufell before reaching the parking lot

Between Grundarfjordur and the parking lot along Route 54, don’t miss the mountain viewpoint, which is well worth a stop. We were struck by the unique perspective offered by this threaded viewpoint. From this vantage point, the shape of the mountain appears even more distinctive and spectacular. In summer, you’ll see the mountain covered in greenery, whilein winter you’ll observe the characteristic black and white rings created by the snow at the top of the mountain.

Panoramic view of the fjords from the bridge

After a 5-minute walk from the parking lot, you’ll reach a bridge spanning the upper cascade. We marveled at the magnificent natural panorama from this strategic location, with the majestic fjords as a backdrop. This bridge crosses the Kirkjufellsá River, which flows into the sea from the Helgrindur Volcano. The river takes its name from the mountain itself. The name Kirkjufell literally means “church mountain”, an appellation that takes on its full meaning when you observe the characteristic silhouette of the summit.

Around Kirkjufell

View of the upper cascade

Kirkjufellsfoss is in fact a combination of several waterfalls tumbling down the same river, descending a total of 16m. We were impressed by the upper part of the waterfall, which is the most spectacular of the whole. The water flows in great, powerful torrents from the heights, creating a striking natural spectacle. The contrast between the power of the water and the surrounding tranquility creates a unique atmosphere.

View of the lower cascade

The lower cascade is less imposing than the upper part, but nevertheless offers a wider, unobstructed panorama of Kirkjufell Mountain. We appreciated this different perspective, which enabled us to embrace the entire site in a single visual composition. The water flow remains high at this level, maintaining a significant sound and visual presence. This section of the cascades provides an excellent vantage point for photographing the entire mountain, with the waterfalls in the foreground.

Panorama from across the bridge

You can also walk down the path on the other side of the bridge to discover an entirely different perspective. We explored this option and found it well worth the detour. From this angle, you’ll see the waterfall in a whole new light, although you’ll lose your direct view of Kirkjufell. In return, you enjoy a magnificent backdrop with the Helgrindur ridge rising majestically behind the waterfalls. This alternative perspective reveals the region’s fascinating geology and offers different photographic opportunities.

Northern lights in Kirkjufell

Unfortunately, we haven’t yet had the opportunity to capture photographs of the Northern Lights over Kirkjufell during our visits. It is, however, renowned for observing and photographing the Northern Lights. The distinctive shape of the mountain, combined with the waterfalls in the foreground, creates an absolutely stunning visual composition for the aurora. What’s more, the view faces north, making it ideal for viewing the northern lights. You won’t be too close to the city, ensuring that the sky is sufficiently dark for optimal observation. We remind you that clear skies and good solar activity are also necessary for a successful observation. Kirkjufell is very popular for auroras, and you’ll probably not be alone there. Be careful not to interfere with the long exposures of other photographers present.

Frequently asked questions

Is it safe to visit Kirkjufell in winter?

Visiting Kirkjufell in winter is safe if you take the necessary precautions. Wear appropriate clothing for Icelandic winter conditions. If you’re not comfortable walking in snow and ice, add crampons to your shoes to guarantee your stability. Above all, don’t get too close to the waterfalls, as you can’t always see where the river begins under the snow and ice.

What are the best angles from which to photograph Kirkjufell?

Kirkjufell can be photographed from a variety of angles. With the waterfall, you can choose the upper or lower part, or opt for the panorama above, which lets you capture the 2 levels simultaneously. With the reflection on the lake, when the water is completely calm, you’ll get an almost perfect mirror image of the mountain. Apparently, you can also access higher ground for an interesting perspective without the waterfall, although we didn’t test this option given the weather conditions. Finally, you can see Kirkjufell from both sides of Route 54, which runs along the peninsula’s northern coast.
