We visited the region anonymously, making our own choices and paying our bills in full.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"South_Iceland_winter_attractions_Map\"><\/span>South Iceland winter attractions: Map<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The notion of &#8220;South Iceland&#8221; varies from one source to another. In our opinion, southern Iceland has four tourist regions in the winter:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Reykjavik<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Golden Circle<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Reykjanes Peninsula<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The southern coast of Iceland, between Seljalandsfoss and H\u00f6fn<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this article, we focus on Iceland&#8217;s south coast. All attractions are a short distance from Route 1.<br\/>That&#8217;s 330km or a 4-hour drive.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Tips_for_visiting_South_Iceland_in_winter\"><\/span>Tips for visiting South Iceland in winter<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">By car: Driving in South Iceland in winter<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In winter, roads may be closed due to snow and wind.<br\/>That said, roads along the south coast are normally clear. Seljalandsfoss<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Iceland\/Winter\/South-Coast-in-Winter\/Seljalandsfoss\/i-xTR23MB\/1\/CwNXrJx9pwWvHm4rPZ5F2cXQpW4LC2LkKf7MpTQx5\/L\/waterfall_Seljalandsfoss_Iceland-3597-L.jpg\" alt=\"Seljalandsfoss in winter\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Seljalandsfoss is one of Iceland&#8217;s best-known waterfalls because you can walk behind it.<br\/>Unfortunately (but fortunately for our safety) this path is closed in winter.<br\/>You can only admire the 60m-high waterfall from the front. It&#8217;s already very pretty, with stalactites forming on the parts where the start is less powerful.<br\/>In addition, the path along the ancient cliffs is landscaped and takes you to another waterfall hidden in the rock: Gljufrabui. Skogafoss<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Iceland\/Winter\/South-Coast-in-Winter\/Skogafoss-Winter\/i-DnzSqr9\/1\/DdDGHqWMsZxmLPR9LQvwk4XJbtgwVhdwQtnxF7pSG\/L\/Waterfall_Skogafoss_Iceland-3620-L.jpg\" alt=\"Skogafoss in winter\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Skogafoss is one of our favorite winter waterfalls.<br\/>The cascade is powerful, a curtain of water 60m high and 25m wide.<br\/>Because of its power and water volume, it won&#8217;t freeze in winter.<br\/>We love the different perspectives you can get, and also the contrasts between black rock and white snow.<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Close to Route 1<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>From Rekjavik = 2h drive<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>From Vik = 30min drive<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Waterfall visible from the parking lot<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Easy flat walk to the waterfall<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>And to get up to the high platform, over 350 steps.
