Our opinion:<\/h3>\n\n<p>Yes, Selvallavatn Viewpoint is well worth a visit. Selvallavatn is an often overlooked stop for visitors, yet it&#8217;s an excellent introduction to the Sn\u00e6fellsnes peninsula.  <\/p>\n\n<p>On a clear day, the panorama of Lake Selvallavatn and the colorful hills surrounding it offers a striking glimpse of the region&#8217;s geological diversity. Access road<\/h3>\n\n<p>Selvallavatn Viewpoint is located along Route 56, which crosses the middle of the Sn\u00e6fellsnes peninsula. The stop is easy to spot thanks to the roadside parking area. We recommend that you get there by car, as there is no public transport to this particular point.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Parking<\/h3>\n\n<p>Parking is available directly off Route 56. It can accommodate around 15 vehicles. Access is free of charge, with no set times.  <\/p>\n\n<p>We advise you to visit at the start of the day, to take advantage of the soft light over the lake and hills, coming from behind you. However, the waterfall will be in the shade.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Length of visit and main difficulties<\/h3>\n\n<p>Allow between 10 and 40min depending on your exploration. A quick stop is enough to admire the panorama from the parking lot, but if you want to hike to the lake or Horn Hill, allow more time. We didn&#8217;t encounter any particular difficulties on the trails. Nestled in the colorful hills of the Sn\u00e6fellsnes peninsula, it reflects the surrounding landscape and offers a panorama of great serenity.  <\/p>\n\n<p>We were struck by the palette of colors that surround it, between the mossy green of the slopes and the darker tones of the rock. In calm weather, the surface of the water acts as a natural mirror. You can reach its banks via one of the paths that leave from the parking lot. This vast terrain of solidified lava bears witness to the intense volcanic activity that has shaped the Sn\u00e6fellsnes peninsula over the millennia.<\/p>\n\n<p>The colorful hues of the volcanic rock stand out against the green of the moss on the lava field. You can observe this expanse directly from the vantage point, without any special effort. Less well known than Iceland&#8217;s great waterfalls, it has a discreet charm that appealed to us. The flow varies according to the season and recent rainfall, but the setting remains pleasant at all times.  <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Iceland\/Snaefellsnes\/Road-56\/i-PknMxXH\/0\/K4BpqK2XbwQQhJktmP4ZHcwT4HX6L9PKmLx6tg7DL\/L\/Road_56_Viewpoint-35-L.jpg\" alt=\"Selvallavatn viewpoint - Selvallafoss waterfall\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_arid_volcanic_cone_towards_Stykkisholmur\"><\/span>The arid volcanic cone towards Stykkish\u00f3lmur<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n<p>Continuing along Route 56 towards Stykkish\u00f3lmur, the landscape changes character. An arid crater is distinguished by its ochre and brown hues, devoid of vegetation. We found that this contrast with the moss near the lake illustrates the geological variety of Sn\u00e6fellsnes.  <\/p>\n\n<p>This relief, sculpted by volcanic activity, reveals another facet of the peninsula. You can see it from the road without any particular detour. A quick stop from the parking lot is all it takes to admire the panorama of the lake and lava field. If you&#8217;d like to take one of the two hikes &#8211; to the lake or to Horn Hill &#8211; you&#8217;ll need more time to enjoy it to the full.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Is Selvallavatn Viewpoint accessible in winter?<\/h3>\n\n<p>The site is located along Route 56, which is generally passable in winter. But if the wind is too strong or conditions too poor, it can be closed, as it rises a little in altitude.<\/p>\n\n<p>However, we recommend that you check road conditions before setting off, as weather conditions in Iceland can change rapidly.
