We were fascinated by the unique shape of this 463m mountain, which rises up from the sea, accompanied by its spectacular waterfalls. Our opinion:<\/h3>\n\n<p>Absolutely! It&#8217;s a <a href=\"https:\/\/iceland-lovers.com\/en\/things-to-do-snaefellsnes-winter-attractions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">must-see attraction on the Snaefellsnes peninsula<\/a> and one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/iceland-lovers.com\/en\/waterfalls-iceland-winter\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">most beautiful waterfalls to see in winter<\/a>. This mountain has an astonishing shape that sets it apart from all other Icelandic peaks. Thanks to its exceptional seaside location and nearby waterfalls, this site has become one of Iceland&#8217;s most iconic and photographed landscapes. There&#8217;s something magical about this place, with its shapes, changing colors and powerful waterfalls that attract professional and amateur photographers alike. there? Access road<\/h3>\n\n<p>It&#8217;s an easy drive along Route 54, with one lane in each direction and a sufficiently wide carriageway. The access road to the Kirkjufell parking lot is normally cleared quickly in case of snow, as it is one of the peninsula&#8217;s main attractions. However, during storms, roads can be closed at the last minute. We strongly recommend that you always check the status of the roads on Umferdin before you leave <a href=\"https:\/\/umferdin.is\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<p>If you don&#8217;t want to drive, organized tours of the Snaefellsnes peninsula from Reykjavik always stop at Kirkjufell. We recommend that you always park in the direction of departure and maneuver on arrival, as you don&#8217;t know how the visitors after you will park. We&#8217;ve devoted an <a href=\"https:\/\/iceland-lovers.com\/en\/kirkjufell-winter-waterfalls\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">entire article<\/a> to this experience, which reveals the mountains in a whole new light. Otherwise, access is free all year round, day and night. Kirkjufell and its waterfalls are recognized as one of Iceland&#8217;s favorite spots for photographers. Here you can admire<strong> sunrises and sunsets <\/strong>in exceptional conditions. It&#8217;s also an ideal place to watch the <strong>Northern Lights <\/strong>, with an unobstructed view to the north.  <\/p>\n\n<p>To optimize your chances of discovering the mountain and its waterfalls in the best possible conditions, we recommend staying close to the site. We strongly recommend that you always carry cleats with you, so that you can add them to your shoes if the need arises. We were struck by the unique perspective offered by this threaded viewpoint. From this vantage point, the shape of the mountain appears even more distinctive and spectacular. We marveled at the magnificent natural panorama from this strategic location, with the majestic fjords as a backdrop. This bridge crosses the Kirkjufells\u00e1 River, which flows into the sea from the Helgrindur Volcano. The river takes its name from the mountain itself. The name Kirkjufell literally means &#8220;church mountain&#8221;, an appellation that takes on its full meaning when you observe the characteristic silhouette of the summit.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Iceland\/Snaefellsnes\/Kirkjufell\/i-XHdHbv6\/0\/M2hXmW3cc3Vs3jHgwTn4gH39bmWThDDFkRXprsVRK\/XL\/Kirkjufell_Iceland_Kirkjufellsfoss_P1030016-XL.jpg\" alt=\"Around Kirkjufell\" title=\"Around Kirkjufell\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"View_of_the_upper_cascade\"><\/span>View of the upper cascade<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n<p>Kirkjufellsfoss is in fact a combination of several waterfalls tumbling down the same river, descending a total of 16m. We were impressed by the upper part of the waterfall, which is the most spectacular of the whole. The water flows in great, powerful torrents from the heights, creating a striking natural spectacle. We appreciated this different perspective, which enabled us to embrace the entire site in a single visual composition. The water flow remains high at this level, maintaining a significant sound and visual presence. This section of the cascades provides an excellent vantage point for photographing the entire mountain, with the waterfalls in the foreground.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img discover an entirely different perspective. We explored this option and found it well worth the detour. From this angle, you&#8217;ll see the waterfall in a whole new light, although you&#8217;ll lose your direct view of Kirkjufell. In return, you enjoy a magnificent backdrop with the Helgrindur ridge rising majestically behind the waterfalls. This alternative perspective reveals the region&#8217;s fascinating geology and offers different photographic opportunities.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Iceland\/Snaefellsnes\/Kirkjufellsfoss\/i-DWHx8xZ\/0\/LH6C3kmkXF9nrv8frwtq6jSQPWF3ZDnzkxLTRtXSn\/L\/Kirkjufellsfoss-2-L.jpg\" alt=\"Mount Kirkjufell and Kirkjufellsfoss waterfalls - Panorama from the other side of the bridge\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Northern_lights_in_Kirkjufell\"><\/span>Northern lights in Kirkjufell<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n<p>Unfortunately, we haven&#8217;t yet had the opportunity to capture photographs of the Northern Lights over Kirkjufell during our visits. It is, however, renowned for observing and photographing the Northern Lights. The distinctive shape of the mountain, combined with the waterfalls in the foreground, creates an absolutely stunning visual composition for the aurora. What&#8217;s more, the view faces north, making it ideal for viewing the northern lights. You won&#8217;t be too close to the city, ensuring that the sky is sufficiently dark for optimal observation. We remind you that clear skies and good solar activity are also necessary for a successful observation. Kirkjufell is very popular for auroras, and you&#8217;ll probably not be alone there. Wear appropriate clothing for Icelandic winter conditions. If you&#8217;re not comfortable walking in snow and ice, add crampons to your shoes to guarantee your stability. Above all, don&#8217;t get too close to the waterfalls, as you can&#8217;t always see where the river begins under the snow and ice.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/iceland-lovers.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Kirkjufell-in-winter-Kirkjufellsfoss.jpeg\" alt=\"Kirkjufell in winter Kirkjufellsfoss\" class=\"wp-image-1203\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What are the best angles from which to photograph Kirkjufell?<\/h3>\n\n<p>Kirkjufell can be photographed from a variety of angles. With the waterfall, you can choose the upper or lower part, or opt for the panorama above, which lets you capture the 2 levels simultaneously. With the reflection on the lake, when the water is completely calm, you&#8217;ll get an almost perfect mirror image of the mountain. Apparently, you can also access higher ground for an interesting perspective without the waterfall, although we didn&#8217;t test this option given the weather conditions.
