But the most important thing is to understand the dangers so you can prepare for them.<br\/>Here&#8217;s a list of conditions to understand before hitting the road in winter in Iceland.<\/p>\n\n<p>The roads are well maintained, but conditions can change rapidly: snow and ice can accumulate in a short space of time, and wind is the worst enemy. It is sometimes very strong, with gusts.  <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Snow piles<\/h3>\n\n<p>Iceland is used to snow. All over the country, they have the equipment and teams needed to clear roads quickly and frequently.<br\/>But sometimes there&#8217;s so much wind pushing the snow onto the road, it feels like a losing battle.<br\/>Clusters can form. That&#8217;s why you mustn&#8217;t drive too fast, to be able to react and shift.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Iceland\/Winter\/Driving\/i-34M2WPv\/1\/LsQjJ4Vt55knX5fdkZzPpFTkBCDs8BkSJSwZZq4Wf\/L\/winter_drive_Snaefellsnes_Iceland-4691-L.jpg\" alt=\"Piles of snow on the road\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ice<\/h3>\n\n<p>Icy conditions are more problematic because they are less visible. Ice can form quickly at night or after rain, especially black ice. Despite the preparation of the roads, black ice still forms regularly.<br\/>The best option is to maintain safe distances, avoid sudden manoeuvres, and don&#8217;t drive too fast.<br\/>Take particular care if you leave early in the morning, before the heat of the traffic has reduced the icy conditions.<br\/>Snow tires are your best friends.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Iceland\/Winter\/Driving\/i-NzxXN38\/1\/NQN8wBmPH8f6kbqC8R3q5wkS3VWTz2jhWQdhTxjx2\/L\/Drive_Road_1_Iceland-4516-L.jpg\" alt=\"Wind that pushes snow\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Wind<\/h3>\n\n<p>But the most surprising danger is the wind. It can surprise you all of a sudden with a gust and send you veering off the road, especially after a bend or a pass.<br\/>Roads are sometimes closed because of the wind. Keep an eye out for signs indicating wind hazards and the opening of mountain passes.<\/p>\n\n<p>If you are pushed and slide to the side of the road, turn your vehicle so that you are head first in the snow at the side of the road, rather than being pushed to the side and tipping over.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Iceland\/Winter\/Driving\/i-Cr5N566\/1\/L9dnggsJQPk6HhqXTNdvSwpVwn2XqPd2v2kcSfq2Q\/L\/Drive_Road_1_Iceland-4493-L.jpg\" alt=\"road condition sign\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Darkness<\/h3>\n\n<p>In winter, days are fairly short (4 to 5 hours of daylight in December and January), a little longer in late February and early March.<br\/>If you want to see a lot of places when it&#8217;s light out, you&#8217;ll have to do a bit of driving at night.  <br\/>This reduced visibility increases the risk of accidents, especially on poorly lit rural roads. Darkness can be disorientating, making it difficult to judge distances and road conditions.<br\/>Once again, slow down and stay alert.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Iceland\/Winter\/Driving\/i-VFHv2Vz\/1\/L7NL5CZM7ScTvCRHDL48CJfBVC3QKX43GKd2TTNfD\/L\/driving_Iceland-1788-L.jpg\" alt=\"Driving before sunrise\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Rennes<\/h3>\n\n<p>In summer, sheep are the biggest danger on these Icelandic roads &#8211; but you won&#8217;t see them in winter.<br\/>However, you can have reindeer crossings in <a href=\"https:\/\/iceland-lovers.com\/en\/iceland-eastern-fjords-winter-highlights\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the eastern fjords<\/a>. This happens quite frequently, so be careful when you see a reindeer not far from the road.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Iceland\/Winter\/East-Fjords\/C-up-to-Djupivogur\/i-XxRnGvL\/1\/CqpQMFTSxp3RCswFbC8WVLWBDwSP4RhCMgHr3hjCr\/L\/reindeer_east_Fjords_Iceland-2-17-L.jpg\" alt=\"reindeer in winter\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>It&#8217;s very rare, but you can also have polar foxes bursting out from under the wheels. As they turn white in winter, it&#8217;s not easy to see them.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Single-lane bridges<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p>Even on Route 1, many bridges are reduced to a single lane. Choosing the right vehicle<\/h3>\n\n<p>Make sure you rent a car from a reliable agency. Check road conditions<\/h3>\n\n<p>Check road conditions every day before you leave<strong> <\/strong>and recommendations on the official website  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.road.is\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\"><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/umferdin.is\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Umferdin<\/a>. Make sure there isn&#8217;t too much wind or other difficulties preventing you from reaching your destination.<br\/>It&#8217;s also a good idea to ask the locals at the hotel for advice.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Iceland\/Winter\/Driving\/i-dZKbdD8\/1\/M7vVpwXMvKxTwjqFjxt5D4rgwPgJgNjkv3pw3F2vg\/L\/drive_South_coast_Iceland-2336-L.jpg\" alt=\"Beautiful open road in Iceland in winter\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Slow and steady wins the race<\/h3>\n\n<p>This is no time to test your driving skills.  <br\/>For greater safety, keep your pace slow and steady.  <br\/>Above all, don&#8217;t make any sudden steering or braking movements.<\/p>\n\n<p>And if the wind or ice increases, don&#8217;t hesitate to stop and wait for better conditions.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. Do not load your itinerary<\/h3>\n\n<p>In winter, the days can be very short. Don&#8217;t plan too much for each day, so you don&#8217;t feel rushed and are tempted to speed up.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">7. In-car equipment<\/h3>\n\n<p>Make sure you have everything you need in case you&#8217;re stuck for a few hours waiting for the snowplow. It&#8217;s rare, but possible.<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>water and food<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>flashlight<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a charger or additional battery for your phone<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>survival blankets &#8211; something we always carry when traveling. You never know what can happen on the road. It takes you all the way around Iceland, with one lane in each direction (with the exception of a few single-lane bridges).<br\/>Most of the time, it&#8217;s quite easy to drive on this road, which is frequently clear. And there&#8217;s a lot of traffic, which melts the snow.<\/p>\n\n<p>Conditions vary widely. You can have a completely clear road and, a few kilometers later, be driving on a thin layer of snow. Always be ready for anything.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Iceland\/Winter\/Driving\/i-mzHx8FD\/1\/KD62Nk6RpLkrpCw2ZN7ScSW8jtZDfcS5s5k32ht8R\/L\/drive_South_coast_Iceland-2322-L.jpg\" alt=\"Route 1 in winter\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Secondary tourist routes<\/h3>\n\n<p>To reach certain attractions and regions, you&#8217;ll need to take secondary roads. They are paved and have one lane in each direction.<br\/>They are normally cleared fairly quickly, especially if they lead to tourist attractions. But sometimes it takes a little longer.<\/p>\n\n<p>The roads have yellow posts on the side to indicate the limit when you can&#8217;t see them well in winter.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to get there<\/h3>\n\n<p>Access roads to the best-known attractions are usually quickly cleared. In less touristy areas, gravel access roads are often snow-covered. These roads are even closed.<br\/>They normally open between mid-June and September.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Driving in Reykjavik in winter (and in other cities)<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p>Driving in<a href=\"https:\/\/iceland-lovers.com\/en\/visit-reykjavik-winter-things-to-do\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> Reykjavik in winter<\/a> is no problem at all. The roads are clear.
