At every turn, you&#8217;ll discover a different style of scenery with more or less snow. It is therefore regularly and rapidly cleared after snowfalls.<\/p>\n\n<p>The roads to some villages, such as Seysidjordur, can involve mountain passes. In this case, the road is not always open. It was an essential road, but was often closed in winter due to heavy snow, hampering traffic to and from eastern Iceland. A tunnel has replaced this steep, narrow pass.<\/p>\n\n<p>But if the conditions aren&#8217;t too bad, you can always climb up to admire the view. Hvalnes lighthouse<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Iceland\/Winter\/East-Fjords\/B-lighthouse\/i-94CHGvW\/1\/Cjjc66sGD4ffpDVgHNqDQkfG5DTnSZK4FLFCLrFvt\/L\/Hvalnes_Lighthouse_Iceland-3035-L.jpg\" alt=\"Hvalnes lighthouse\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>A little further along Route 1, stop off at the Hvalnes lighthouse. The lighthouse is a bright orange concrete structure rising to a height of 11.5 metres. Located on a rocky promontory, you can&#8217;t miss it!<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Iceland\/Winter\/East-Fjords\/B-lighthouse\/i-jDxc4gN\/1\/tfxPmPP2mHVWG58DG49tM4nrnhKHgjHzPhCfg4hp\/L\/Hvalnes_Lighthouse_Iceland-3022-L.jpg\" alt=\"view from Hvalnes lighthouse\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>Even if it&#8217;s surprising in shape and color, we recommend a stop here, especially to admire the black sand beach, the lagoon, the breathtaking peaks and the waves crashing on the rocks below.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"3_Fauskasandur\"><\/span>3. Fauskasandur<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Iceland\/Winter\/East-Fjords\/C-up-to-Djupivogur\/i-4mBfvFW\/1\/6MHbj2wJbN4ZwjtbRNKWZ3Dd5fDrKxhhtzrNmQFT\/L\/monolith_Black_Beach_Iceland-3833-L.jpg\" alt=\"Fauskasandur beach\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>Fauskasandur is a black sand beach with a dark monolith standing on the shore. The surrounding mountains and small cliffs add to the dramatic scenery, especially when covered in snow. The population of around 6,000 to 7,000 is concentrated in eastern Iceland, closer to coastal areas. So drive carefully!<\/p>\n\n<p>Worth knowing: Icelandic reindeer are not indigenous. They were introduced from Norway in the 18th century. They have adapted to the harsh Icelandic climate, protected from the cold by their thick fur.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"5_Djupivogur_and_its_eggs\"><\/span>5. Djupivogur and its eggs<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Iceland\/Winter\/East-Fjords\/D-Berufjordur\/i-7rhTkCT\/1\/FRkVTPjVWfF24Mvf3xVRL3NddF8zp3rJShVd3XF2t\/L\/Djupivogur_Iceland-3200-L.jpg\" alt=\"Djupivogur church\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>Dj\u00fapivogur is a quiet village in the east. Don&#8217;t miss the opportunity to stop off and enjoy the seaside atmosphere.<br\/>Let&#8217;s start with the village church, a charming wooden structure in shades of gray and black. It stands out against the snowy landscape.  <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Iceland\/Winter\/East-Fjords\/D-Berufjordur\/i-BBrgzMN\/1\/DB5FTG6t7cSvJ23ppSxvKmPnmDHmHbBpS68KRLbvZ\/L\/Djupivogur_Iceland-3845-L.jpg\" alt=\"Djupivogur port\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>You can also go down to the port, which is often covered in snow. It remains active with its fishing boats and offers breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains.<br\/>Nearby you&#8217;ll find restaurants and caf\u00e9s.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Iceland\/Winter\/East-Fjords\/D-Berufjordur\/i-XZFHMm6\/1\/CFLNjwm9wbW48BCVrpkxGNtdCZvgHKmRPVg5bScsj\/L\/Djupivogur_Iceland-3211-L.jpg\" alt=\"Egg sculptures in Djupivogur\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>Dj\u00fapivogur is also known for its sculpture &#8220;Eggin \u00ed Glediv\u00edk&#8221; by Sigurdur Gudmundsson. It features 34 large granite eggs representing local bird species. The fjord is surrounded by snow-capped mountains, creating a striking contrast with the dark waters.<br\/>We loved the secluded beauty and super-quiet environment. What&#8217;s more, without too much wind, we had beautiful reflections on the inlet!<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"7_Breidalsvik\"><\/span>7. Breidalsvik<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Iceland\/Winter\/East-Fjords\/F-up-tp-Breidalsvik\/i-cKsjCt7\/1\/C24ZdDt4ZqGT5K7xsd7KS2PcZcz7LcDXqs8tzFnTR\/L\/Breidalsvik_fjord_Iceland-3872-L.jpg\" alt=\"Breidalsvik\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>The next fjord is Breidalsvik. It is shallow and crossed in the middle by a bridge. There&#8217;s a tiny, isolated village. The place is very serene.<\/p>\n\n<p>Don&#8217;t miss the viewpoint with parking just beyond the fjord. You&#8217;ll discover magnificent landscapes with the sea in the foreground. We found the mountains at the end of the fjord particularly beautiful, all white with little black lines. We were also spoilt for choice with the beautiful lights on the way to the bottom of the fjord.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Iceland\/Winter\/East-Fjords\/G-Stodvarfjordur\/i-n8TqgKg\/1\/CM6bmk2CDrdZ3bwvMK54B7WLLpmQxZ8gCsQn6G9X3\/L\/Stodvarfjordur_Iceland-3381-L.jpg\" alt=\"blue-roofed church of Stodvarfjordur\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>St\u00f6dvarfj\u00f6rdur is also a small village known for its blue village church, which stands out against the snowy landscape. It adds a touch of color to the winter landscape.  <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"9_Faskrudsfjordur_and_Andey_Island\"><\/span>9. Faskrudsfjordur and Andey Island<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Iceland\/Winter\/East-Fjords\/H-Faskrudsfjordur\/i-wthmsCz\/1\/CZGnTCJ9b9mnpR3VwQ6QK8d36dSbqbd6XHD33dXLW\/L\/Faskrudsfjordur_Iceland-3385-L.jpg\" alt=\"Dkrudur Island\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>Faskrudsfjordur is the next fjord. It is narrow and very long. And at its mouth are a number of small islands.<br\/>From the road, if it&#8217;s not foggy, you can see the small island of Skrudur.<br\/>There are in fact two islets: Andey, the nearest, but very flat and therefore barely visible, and Skrudur, which emerges almost vertically from the sea. They are strategically located at the entrance to the fjord.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Iceland\/Winter\/East-Fjords\/H-Faskrudsfjordur\/i-886vN5k\/1\/C7tCBWQdGDFHfKWfHBJKqnpPwj523QHNVgp9FNwL7\/L\/Faskrudsfjordur_Iceland-3412-L.jpg\" alt=\"Faskrudsfjordur\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>Once again, it&#8217;s a road surrounded by snow-capped mountains. But each time, the width of the fjords and the shapes of the mountains mean that the panoramas are different and fascinating.<\/p>\n\n<p>At the end of the fjord, you don&#8217;t continue along the seafront. The road is no longer paved. You cross a pass to return inland.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"10_Seydisfjordur\"><\/span>10. Seydisfjordur<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Iceland\/Winter\/East-Fjords\/J-Seydisfjordur\/i-CDb48ZR\/1\/CjwPXf3VGdLDFxGGx2Mbdb25pfMWQ6DWSbmNJvcnS\/L\/road_Seydisfjordur_Iceland-3520-L.jpg\" alt=\"access road to Seydisfjordur\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>If conditions aren&#8217;t bad, we highly recommend a detour to Seydisfjordur. In our opinion, it&#8217;s the most beautiful fjord in Iceland, with its village at the end (you&#8217;ve seen it in the film <em>Walter Mitty<\/em>).<\/p>\n\n<p>However, it&#8217;s a major detour with a mountain pass. So make sure you have enough time while it&#8217;s daylight and the road is open!<\/p>\n\n<p>The valley is long and narrow. Just enjoy the drive down to the town, overlooking the narrow fjord.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Iceland\/Winter\/East-Fjords\/J-Seydisfjordur\/i-pwjScTt\/1\/FFGXmqkzb7j47mMk9GWdzkdcvGvgPWB2ffPqf4xHw\/L\/Seydisfjordur_Iceland-3553-L.jpg\" alt=\"Seydisfjordur village\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>Once downstairs, you can explore the city. It&#8217;s nestled at the end of the fjord, surrounded by a backdrop of snow-capped mountains.  <br\/>This small village has a unique charm, with colorful wooden houses and a sky-blue church&#8230;
