Our opinion:<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hverir is well worth a visit in winter. The geothermal zone remains accessible and offers a unique, otherworldly landscape, even in cold weather. Winter access road<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In winter, Route 1 to Lake Myvatn is usually quickly cleared. But there are fewer cars than in the south, so the ground layer melts less.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Normally, the roads are cleared quickly enough for access. Accessible at any time of day.<br\/>There&#8217;s really no better time to visit.<br\/>And it&#8217;s one <a href=\"https:\/\/iceland-lovers.com\/en\/best-things-to-do-iceland-winter-attractions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">of Iceland&#8217;s must-see attractions in winter<\/a>!<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Iceland\/Winter\/North-Iceland\/Myvatn\/Namafjall-Hverir\/i-Q3CMNNx\/1\/wLbBqf3B9NtSPDxrwjsQk8VPd6T66vXL4vbqmSpc\/L\/Namafjall_Hverir_Iceland-3808-L.jpg\" alt=\"Map of Hverir\" style=\"width:702px;height:auto\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Map: Hverir walking loop<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Length of visit and main difficulties<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Allow at least 30min to circumnavigate the part of the site open in winter (marked paths to avoid burning your feet).<br\/>But if you&#8217;re like me and fascinated by mud bubbles, you can plan ahead.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You&#8217;ll move from snow-covered areas to areas where the snow is melting.<br\/>Above all, stay well between the ropes, on the identified paths. It&#8217;s dangerous to walk in other places.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Beware, too, of the sulfur smell, which resembles rotten eggs.<br\/>This is due to geothermal activity. LOL.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Cracks<\/h2>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Iceland\/Winter\/North-Iceland\/Myvatn\/Namafjall-Hverir\/i-Th4j6QQ\/1\/K3bjXspq2L6Ss57k28SksWDbD6CwTcFxWXChrgJXw\/L\/Namafjall_Hverir_Iceland-3955-L.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whether in summer or winter, we&#8217;re always fascinated by the cracks in this place. We love the north of Iceland, for all its post-apocalyptic landscapes. If it weren&#8217;t for the people in the photo above, you&#8217;d think we were in a different world!<br\/>What&#8217;s more, it&#8217;s ideal for photography, to make the eye travel.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Bubbling mud<\/h2>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Iceland\/Winter\/North-Iceland\/Myvatn\/Namafjall-Hverir\/i-8nn6h9w\/1\/K693GDs4GJzqPjg2PTT57S2BRJpKnZ344n7Q9Vwgq\/L\/Namafjall_Hverir_Iceland-3833-L.jpg\" alt=\"Bubbling mud\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this geothermal zone, you&#8217;ll mainly find mudpots. These are acid hot springs with limited water. The formation of mud pools occurs in high-temperature geothermal zones where water is scarce.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The process begins when a small amount of water rises to the surface in an area rich in volcanic ash and clay.  <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Iceland\/Winter\/North-Iceland\/Myvatn\/Namafjall-Hverir\/i-9F52SZq\/1\/KDRjL7TgFsRFW7xgHxn2XXT943N2t2k3Gr9cbHPnr\/L\/Namafjall_Hverir_Iceland-3852-L.jpg\" alt=\"bubbling mud basins\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Acid and micro-organisms break down the surrounding rock into clay and mud.<br\/>Boiling mud often spurts over the edges of the pool, building a mini-volcano-like structure that can reach heights of 1 to 1.5 metres.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The shape of the bubbles that explode at the surface is different every time. So it&#8217;s quite fascinating to watch.
