Our opinion:<\/h3>\n\n<p>Kirkjufell is well worth a visit in winter. The mountain&#8217;s unique shape becomes even more striking when covered in snow, and the partially frozen Kirkjufellsfoss waterfalls create a fairytale scene. The river is also partially frozen and snow-covered, with its pastel or intense blues.<\/p>\n\n<p>It&#8217;s one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/iceland-lovers.com\/en\/things-to-do-snaefellsnes-winter-attractions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">must-see attractions on the Snaefellsnes peninsula<\/a> and one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/iceland-lovers.com\/en\/waterfalls-iceland-winter\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">most beautiful waterfalls to see in winter<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<figure Winter access road<\/h3>\n\n<p>The Sanefellsnes peninsula is normally accessible in winter, and the main roads are clear.<\/p>\n\n<p>Normally, the roads are cleared quickly enough for access. But during snowstorms, roads may be closed at the last minute &#8211; always check the status of roads on <a href=\"https:\/\/umferdin.is\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Umferdin<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<p>The access road to the Kirkjufell parking lot is very short and usually cleared quickly, as this is one of the main attractions.<\/p>\n\n<p>If you don&#8217;t want to drive, organized tours of the Snaefellsnes Peninsula from Reykjavik always stop at Kirkjufell &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.getyourguide.com\/kirkjufell-l114537\/?partner_id=R3GYW4V&amp;cmp=iceland\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener sponsored nofollow\">see options<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Iceland\/Winter\/Snaefellsnes\/Kirkjufell\/i-JccB2ZP\/1\/WtjNJVwHbdKMvsK7kFgS6FxZzRnWmJmmfdMGTgKJ\/L\/Kirkjufell_Iceland-4774-L.jpg\" alt=\"access road to Kirkjufell\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Parking<\/h3>\n\n<p>A good-sized, flat parking lot is available.<br\/>We advise you always to park in the direction of departure, and to maneuver on arrival, as you don&#8217;t know how the people after you will park.<br\/>In the photo above, you can see the parking lot from the access road, and in the photo below, on the way back from the path.<\/p>\n\n<p>Parking is now charged at 1000 ISK for the day (even if the visit is short). Here you can admire sunrises and sunsets. It&#8217;s a 5-minute walk from the parking lot to the waterfalls.<\/p>\n\n<p>Be careful, with snow and ice on the ground, it can be slippery. Kirkjufell mountain is a 463-metre peak, and from this angle its shape is even more unique.<\/p>\n\n<p>As you can see from the photo, in winter its striking pyramid shape is accentuated by a blanket of snow, its layers of stratified rock contrasting with the white. You&#8217;ll discover a magnificent snow-covered panorama with the fjords in the background.<br\/>This bridge spans the Kirkjufells\u00e1 River, which continues on towards the sea. This river begins on the Helgrindur volcano. The river is named after the mountain. And the name Kirkjufell means &#8220;church mountain&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Upper_waterfall\"><\/span>Upper waterfall<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Iceland\/Winter\/Snaefellsnes\/Kirkjufell\/i-nftLqgd\/1\/CcQTjR83GptL2MT4bvvLt3B4z4JtNtVRs2DQNHCwf\/L\/Kirkjufell_Iceland-4171-L.jpg\" alt=\"Upper waterfall\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>Kirkjufellsfoss is in fact a combination of several waterfalls flowing into the same river, descending a total of 16 metres (52 feet).<\/p>\n\n<p>In winter, the upper part is the most impressive.<br\/>Large columns of ice form along the wall. These natural sculptures are fascinating.<br\/>You can get close, but be careful. With the snow, it&#8217;s hard to tell the difference between the ground and the river.<br\/>We saw someone fall into the river because he was so focused on his camera!<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Lower_cascade\"><\/span>Lower cascade<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Iceland\/Winter\/Snaefellsnes\/Kirkjufell\/i-sJxbqjW\/1\/mhH85gtsrjDnxgSdW5dVCwRdCWLDXTp5hnqwPZmH\/L\/Kirkjufell_Iceland-4179-L.jpg\" alt=\"Lower cascade\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>Ice sculptures also form on the lower cascade, but the water continues to flow between them.<br\/>It is less impressive than the upper part. However, when we were there, the blue colors of the river were bewitching. You lose your view of Kirkjufell, but you have the Helgrindur ridge in the background.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Northern_lights_in_Kirkjufell_in_winter\"><\/span>Northern lights in Kirkjufell in winter<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n<p>Sorry, we haven&#8217;t been able to take any photos of the aurora over Kirkjufell yet.<\/p>\n\n<p>But the location is indeed excellent for viewing and photographing the Northern Lights.<br\/>The distinctive shape of the mountain, combined with the waterfalls in the foreground, creates a magnificent composition.<br\/>What&#8217;s more, the view faces north, which is better, and you&#8217;re not too close to the city to get a sufficiently dark sky, which is essential for optimal aurora viewing.<br\/>We remind you that clear skies and good solar activity are also essential for successful observing.<br\/>Last but not least, Kirkjufell is very popular, and you won&#8217;t be alone if you want to see the aurora.
